I thought this was a really important question because upon greater reflection, I felt that answer contributes to my identity.
Growing up, I guess that I honestly did watch sports because it was something my father did. Like any typical Englishman, he loved his football and his cricket. I remember when I used to walk into his room and he'd tell me to keep quiet cause a game was on. I'd sit quietly in his chair and watch patiently, just to spend a little more time with him.
Having a father who was a journalist meant that he wasn't around very much. He had to be on television live and this meant that he had to be on when everyone else was home to watch him on air. Everyone including myself. By the time he'd get back, I would already be asleep and so I didn't see him very much. I don't know what it was, but I looked up to him very much.
Maybe it was the fact that he was my hero growing up. When that little girl who sat beside me on the bus used to bully me and threaten to ask her brother to beat me up, he'd always tell me to not be afraid because he'd beat them up. Although he was strict and still is strict, he'd always made sure I was okay and happy and I guess that made me really respect him. To top it off, this man was constantly so happy doing what he loved for a living. He really lived out that really deep and cheem phrase - "Find a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life."
So yeah. I began to do every thing I could to spend time with him. Testing him on Formula One drivers and their teams, going to live games and having him teach me the rules of some new sports so that he's get more familiar with them. I guess it grew on me. Not to mention, there are a few pretty good looking players out there. HAHA.
But let me explain why I really love and enjoy the sports I watch.
Baseball.
To be very fair, the reason why I first watched this sport had to do with the fact that the players' wore really tight pants and they were pretty darn fit HAHAHAHA. But yes, that's not the *cough* main reason I watch this sport any more. Let me tell you about my team that I support and love so much. My Yankees. I've watched this team since I was 9 years old and I've fallen head over heels in love with my team. On the outside, baseball seems so simplistic and individualistic. I mean, it seems like all you have to do in order to win is have a pretty good guy at bat who can swing homerun after homerun, am I right? But no, there's so much more to the sport than that. There's so much teamwork - sometimes you have to sacrifice your participation in the inning so that you're team mate can score a run, sometimes you gotta take one for the team and not be the shining star that will be the one running back to home plate. No one had the same job, everyone plays different roles in order to reach that goal and to me, that was so beautiful. People, who were so different - some not even being able to speak the same language, still coming together to achieve something was amazing. They fought hard and had to train hard, to work as a team and be humble at the same time for the greater good. That's why I love my captain so much and I'm just so sad to see him go. He had the dream of being a Yankee and he did it, this little boy who grew up in a tiny house, he did it. He beat the odds. He got his dream. And what did he do? He didn't shove it in everyone's face that he was the captain, he didn't stand at the top step shouting if someone did something wrong. All he did was encourage his people to do what they love and love what they do. He would pat a guy on the back and just remind them of what they wanted to achieve, never lashing out at anyone or showing his bad side. Derek Jeter, you're one awesome player and thank you for leading the team and bringing us four world championships. We're all indebted to your amazing leadership, incredible talent and determination. I know I'm sidetracking but yeah, the game has just shown me what it means to be a team player, to be part of a family. Never forget to keep your head down and work hard for the goal and never doubt that you're alone. Baseball has taught me that at the very least, you always have your team mates standing around you and backing you up. You are not alone in this arena.

Formula One.
Yes, many people love to tell me over and over again that this is one of the STUPIDEST sports known to man kind because what is the point of watching a car go round and round a track wasting fuel? Well, I beg to differ because let me tell you that there is TONS more to this sport than you think. Do you know how much the drivers have to train to be able to withstand the G forces that they experience when driving the car round the track? May I remind everyone that this means they can feel a force of up to 6 times their body weight pressing against them??!!? So yeah that amount of mental and physical strength must be ridiculous. It just inspires me to be stronger to, to not give up and to work my way to the top.
MMA.
Lol the obsession with this sport really started because Eddie Ng had a lovely body HAHAHAHA oh how the shallow girl in me cheers. But wow when I started reading his tweets and I started to follow other people in the business like Chatri Sityadong and Shinya Aiyoki, I swear I was so inspired by these people. They go to crazy and gruelling days where they have to survive on food like matcha tea, chicken breasts etc. but at the same time have train like mad man. They fight until they come home with swollen faces, at the same time exercise their butts off by running, doing maintainence training ect. It's just mad man. But it's amazing to see how they LOVE and I mean absoletlye love what they do that they'd give up sooooo much for it!!! And I mean they really just tell the world that basically, you should never give up and just do what you love, even if the road to accomplishing it is difficult. Their drive and determination really deserved to be applauded by the entire universe, let alone planet Earth.
So yeah. Those are my sports that I love, those people I talked about are the heroes that inspire me to continue to work hard every day and work hard towards my goal. They show me how happy you can be when you reach that end.
So why sports? Because I love it.
